# How to connect the Modular DS MCP to your AI assistant

What if you could manage your WordPress sites just by asking your AI assistant? By connecting the Modular DS MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT or another compatible client, you'll be able to check and manage your sites in natural language, without leaving your chat. In this guide we'll walk you through connecting it step by step in the most common clients.

## Before you start

You only need two things:

* The address of the Modular DS MCP server: https://mcp.modulards.com/mcp
* An AI client compatible with remote MCP servers (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code, among others).

You don't need to generate any key or token: the server uses sign-in via OAuth, so the first time you connect you'll only need to log in and authorize access from a secure page.

Keep in mind that some clients, such as Claude, connect to the server from their own cloud infrastructure and not from your computer. That's why the server must be reachable over the internet: if you work behind a VPN or a corporate firewall, the connection could fail even if you can open the address without any problem.

The menu and option names shown in this guide are the ones in effect at the time of publication. These clients are updated frequently, so it's possible that a screen may have changed slightly by the time you check it.

## Connecting with Claude

Claude supports custom connectors on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. On the Free plan you can add a single custom connector.

### On individual plans (Free, Pro and Max)

**1. Open the connector settings.** In claude.ai or in the desktop app, go to “Settings” and select “Connectors”.

**2. Add a custom connector.** Click the “Add” button, in the top right corner.

**3. Enter the name and address.** Type an identifiable name, for example “MCP Modular DS”, and paste the address https://mcp.modulards.com/mcp. Then click “Continue”.

**4. Confirm the authentication.** Claude automatically detects your server's configuration: sign-in via OAuth (“Log in now”) and automatic client registration. Leave the options exactly as they appear detected and click “Add”.

**5. Connect.** The connector is already added, but not connected yet. Click “Connect” and log in to authorize access to your sites.

**6. Define the type of permissions.** You can set them to be read-only or read and write.

**7. Turn it on in your conversations.** To use it in a chat, click the “+” button in the conversation, choose “Add connectors” and enable the Modular DS one.

### On Team or Enterprise plans

On these plans, a user with an owner role must first add the connector from “Organization settings › Connectors”. After that, each team member enables it from “Connectors”, clicking “Connect” and logging in with their own account.

### On mobile (iOS and Android)

You can use the connector from the mobile app, but you must have added it first from claude.ai in the browser or in the desktop app. New connectors can't be set up from mobile.

## Connecting with ChatGPT

ChatGPT's custom connectors are also available on the Free plan and require developer mode to be enabled.

**1. Enable developer mode.** In “Settings”, open the “Plugins” section (depending on your version, it may also appear as “Connectors”). Inside, under “Advanced”, enable the “Developer mode” option. You only need to do this once.

**2. Create a custom connector.** Choose the option to add a custom connector.

**3. Enter the details.** Type a name, for example “MCP Modular DS”, and paste the address https://mcp.modulards.com/mcp. Save and authorize access when prompted.

## For developer clients

If you work with code editors, the connection is done through a configuration file or a command, but always using the same address: https://mcp.modulards.com/mcp.

### Cursor

Open “Settings › Features › MCP”, click “Add new MCP server” and fill in the name and address. You can also add it by editing the `~/.cursor/mcp.json` file:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "modulards": {
      "url": "https://mcp.modulards.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

### VS Code (with GitHub Copilot)

Create the `.vscode/mcp.json` file in your project, or use the “MCP: Add Server” command. Remember that in VS Code the main key is `servers` and that the tools only appear in Copilot's “Agent” mode:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "modulards": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.modulards.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

### Claude Code

In the terminal, run the following command and then use `/mcp` inside Claude Code to log in:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http modulards https://mcp.modulards.com/mcp
```

### Codex

Codex stores its configuration in `~/.codex/config.toml`. Add this entry, restart Codex and run `/mcp` to log in:

```
[mcp_servers.modulards]
url = "https://mcp.modulards.com/mcp"
```

## Other compatible clients

Most clients with remote MCP support (Mistral / Le Chat, Windsurf, among others) follow the same pattern: look for the option to add an MCP server or connector, type a name and paste the address https://mcp.modulards.com/mcp. Authorization happens via OAuth the first time a tool is used.

## Checking that the connection works

Once connected, ask your assistant something simple, for example: “Show me my Modular DS sites and their update status.” The assistant will show the corresponding tool, ask you for permission to run it and return the result. If it does, you're all set!

## If something doesn't work

If the connection doesn't respond as expected, try these quick fixes:

* **No tools appear:** check that the address is exactly https://mcp.modulards.com/mcp, with “/mcp” at the end, and restart the client; many only refresh the tool list on startup.
* **The sign-in doesn't complete:** allow pop-ups in your browser and, if it still fails, remove the connector and add it again to force a new authorization.
* **The connection stays blank or gives an error:** it may be due to a VPN, a firewall or a proxy blocking access. Remember that Claude connects from the cloud, so the server must be reachable over the internet.
