How to put your website in maintenance mode

When you're making changes to a website, updating its design, or fixing an issue, maintenance mode shows your visitors a notice page instead of a half-finished site or one with errors.


In this article we'll show you how to enable it from Modular DS and how to customize the page your visitors will see without needing to install an extra plugin just for this.


Activate maintenance mode


Maintenance mode is set up in each website's settings.


  1. Go to the detail view of the website you want to put into maintenance.
  2. Open "Site settings" from the sidebar.
  3. Open the "Maintenance mode" tab.
  4. Turn on the "Activate maintenance mode" toggle.




Customize the page your visitors will see


Under "Maintenance page" you can tailor the notice shown on screen to your visitors. There are three elements you can edit:


  • "Title": the main message shown in large text, such as "Website under maintenance".
  • "Description": the text below the title that lets your visitors know the site will be back soon.
  • "Background color": the color of the page, so it matches the site's branding.


The "Preview" block shows you in real time how the page looks as you make changes, so you can adjust it without leaving the screen.



Prevent the site from being indexed during maintenance


A little further down you'll find the "Avoid indexing" option. When you turn it on, you tell Google and other search engines not to index the site while maintenance mode is active.


We recommend leaving it enabled. This keeps the notice page out of search results and protects the site's ranking while you work on it.


Once everything is set up, click "Save changes" to apply the configuration.


When you finish the maintenance


Go back to the "Maintenance mode" tab, turn off the "Activate maintenance mode" toggle, and click "Save changes" again. Your website will go back to displaying normally to visitors.
