How WordPress Multisite works in Modular DS
If you manage a WordPress Multisite installation, Modular DS behaves a little differently than it does with a regular WordPress site.
In this article we explain what you need to keep in mind when managing the maintenance of these sites from the platform.
Connecting the sites of a Multisite to Modular DS
The sites of a WordPress Multisite installation are treated as independent sites within Modular DS, even though some of the platform's features, such as backups or updates, are only performed from the parent site.
For this reason, you can choose whether to connect only the network's main site or to connect all of them, so you can take advantage of features on every site such as:
- "Uptime Monitor" to monitor their availability.
- Connections with "Google Analytics" and "Google Search Console".
- Performance analysis.
- Database optimization.
- Broken link analysis.
- Generating reports for your clients.
This way you can work on each site of the Multisite independently when it comes to data and monitoring.
Managing the plugins of a Multisite from Modular DS
In WordPress Multisite, plugin management always works at the network level. Installing, updating or deleting plugins is an action of the main site, not of each subsite.
Modular DS respects this behavior. When you update, install or delete plugins from your dashboard, the operation applies to the entire Multisite, not to a specific subsite.
Within each subsite you can only activate or deactivate the plugins that are already installed. Installing and deleting always happens at the network level (that is, on the parent site).
Backups in a Multisite
When you run a backup from any of the sites in the network, you are actually creating a backup of the entire installation.
This happens because all the sites in the Multisite share the same database and the same WordPress folder.
That's why the backup is always global by default.
