Update Copilot: what it is and how it works

Update Copilot is the intelligent scoring system in Modular DS that analyzes each plugin update and gives it a score from 1 to 100 based on how safe it is to run.


In this article we explain how that score is calculated, where to see it, and how to use it to decide when to update.


How the score works


The higher the score (closer to 100), the more reliable the update and the lower the risk of it breaking your site. A low score is a signal to review it carefully before updating, or to run a safe update.


To calculate it, Update Copilot evaluates more than 15 parameters of the plugin and your site. These include:


  • The amount of code changes between your version and the new one
  • Whether it's a major or minor update
  • How long ago the new version was released
  • The complexity of your site
  • The plugin's and that specific version's track record among Modular DS users


Where to see the score


The score appears as a number next to each plugin in the updates list, both in the global updater and in each site's individual updater.



When you click the number, a panel opens with the score breakdown, split into four blocks: "Changes", "Version", "Popularity and adoption" and "Site risk". Each block shows its own risk level, or "Unknown risk" when there isn't enough data to evaluate it.



Simple explanation with AI


Inside that same panel you'll find the "Simple explanation" button. When you click it, artificial intelligence generates a plain-language analysis that summarizes why the plugin has that score and tells you whether it's safe to update or better to wait.




Why the same plugin can have different scores


The same plugin can have a different score depending on the site where it's installed. This happens because Update Copilot takes into account each site's environment (for example, whether it's an e-commerce site or how many active plugins it has) and the specific version it's going to update to. That factor is what you see reflected in the "Site risk" block.


That's why reviewing the score site by site helps you decide where to update with confidence and where to be more cautious.
