Where your backups are stored and how to change the region

When you make backups with Modular DS, they are securely stored on AWS (Amazon Web Services) cloud servers.

Until recently, all backups were stored on servers in Europe, but since Modular DS version 3.0 you can now choose the region where you want them stored, and even have a different region for each backup configuration.

Where you can store your backups

Modular DS stores your backups on AWS cloud infrastructure, and you can choose between three regions:

  • Europe (Ireland): servers located in Ireland, within the European Union.
  • US East (N. Virginia): servers located in the United States.
  • Asia Pacific (Singapore): servers located in Singapore.

Depending on your preferences or your data protection requirements, you can choose the location that suits you best and adjust it for each site. The choice is yours, and you can set it site by site.

Which region is used by default

When you create a backup configuration, Modular DS preselects the region closest to your location. If that option already works for you, you don't need to do anything: you can leave it as is and move on.

If you want to change the region where backups are stored by default for your organization, you can do so by editing its settings from the "Organizations" page.

If you prefer another region, you just need to change it, as we explain below:

How to change the region of a configuration

The region is chosen within each backup configuration. This way you can have, for example, one configuration that stores in Europe and another in the United States, depending on what each site needs.

  1. Go to "Backups" from the general overview of your account.
  2. Open the "Global Configurations" tab.

  1. Choose the configuration you want to adjust. To modify an existing one, click the three dots and select "Edit configuration". To start from scratch, use "Create global settings".

  1. Inside the configuration, find the "Data region" section and open the dropdown.
  2. Select the region where you want your backups to be stored and save the changes.

Things to keep in mind

Each configuration is independent: the region you choose in one doesn't affect the others. This gives you room to organize your sites' data according to what each client needs.

The region change applies to new backups generated from that point onwards.
