How to add multiple websites to Modular DS at once
If you manage a large number of WordPress websites, adding them to Modular DS one by one can take hours.
To speed up this process, Modular DS lets you connect several websites at the same time, defining the initial configuration (backups, uptime, broken links checker, and malware scan) once and applying it to the entire batch.
This option is especially useful if you're coming from another tool and want to migrate your sites to Modular DS.
How it works
When you choose to add multiple websites at once, Modular DS generates a personalized version of the Modular Connector plugin with the configuration you have defined.
That plugin is the one you install on each website you want to connect.
Once activated in WordPress, the site appears in your Modular DS dashboard already connected and with the entire configuration applied, without having to paste any keys or tweak any settings manually.
In other words, instead of repeating the connection process on each website, you prepare what you want once and then just install.
Step by step
1. Choose the option to add multiple sites
From your Modular DS dashboard, click "Add website". On the screen that opens, select "Add multiple sites".
2. Define the configuration that will apply to the batch
In this step you decide how the websites will be configured from the moment they connect. The initial configuration is organized into four areas: backups, uptime, broken links checker, and malware scan.
For all four you can either apply a configuration you already have in your account for other websites, or create a
new one from scratch.
Reusing an existing configuration is the quickest route if you already know how you want to set up your sites.
Keep in mind that what you decide here will apply equally to every website in the batch. If you're connecting websites with very different profiles (for example, a high-traffic online store and a personal blog), the sensible approach is to split them into different batches and run the flow once per batch.
Backups: you choose the backup frequency (daily, weekly, or monthly), the retention days (45, 60, or 90), and the location of your WordPress folders. You can learn more about setting up your backups in Schedule recurring backups.
Uptime Monitor: you choose the check frequency, the time threshold for considering your site down, and technical details such as the HTTP method, the accepted status codes, and the region from which the monitoring runs. Broken Links Checker: you choose the analysis frequency, the scope (internal links, external links, or both), the analysis mode, and which HTML elements are checked.
Malware Scan: you choose the analysis frequency, whether to limit the scan to the WordPress table prefix, and whether to exclude files by extension.
3. Choose the team the websites will be added to
In Modular DS, every website belongs to a team (think of it as a folder). In this step you decide which team the websites in the batch will be added to:
- "Add to an existing team": the websites are added to a team you already have in your account.
- "Add to a new team": you create the team on the spot, and the websites are added to it.
Once you've picked the team, click "Continue".
4. Download your personalized plugin
When you continue, Modular DS generates a .zip file with a version of the Modular Connector plugin that has all the configuration you defined in the previous steps embedded inside.
This file is the key piece of the flow: it's what makes each website connect with your configuration already applied.
On the "Your sites are ready to connect" screen, click "Download file" and save the .zip to your computer.
Remember that the file is valid for 24 hours for security reasons. If you need more time to install it on all your websites, go back to step 1 and generate a new one with the same configuration.
5. Install the plugin on each website
With the .zip downloaded, all that's left is to install it on each website you want to connect to Modular DS. On each one:
- Log into the WordPress dashboard as an administrator.
- Go to "Plugins", then "Add New Plugin", and then "Upload Plugin".
- Select the .zip file you downloaded and click "Install Now".
- Activate the plugin.
There are no extra steps inside WordPress. The connection keys and all the configuration you decided on in step 2 travel inside the file, so as soon as the plugin is activated, the job is done.
What happens when you activate the plugin on a website
The moment the plugin is activated in WordPress, the site connects to your Modular DS account, joins the team you chose, and is configured according to what you defined in step 2.
The backups are scheduled, the uptime monitor starts checking the site, and the broken links checker and malware scan begin running without you having to open the website inside Modular DS.
If you're installing the plugin on several websites in one go, each one will appear in your dashboard as it activates in its respective WordPress.
If you're coming from another management tool
If you currently manage your websites with another tool that lets you install a plugin on many sites at the same time, this flow works directly for migrating all your sites to Modular DS. Instead of installing the plugin website by website, you use that tool as an intermediary:
- Follow steps 1 to 4 of this article to generate your personalized .zip file.
- Upload that file to your current management tool as if it were your own plugin.
- Install and activate it on all the websites you want to migrate, using the tool's bulk installation feature.
- Return to your Modular DS dashboard. The websites will be incorporated as the plugin activates on each one.
This way you can migrate hundreds of sites to Modular DS in a single operation without accessing the WordPress of each website.
