My website appears disconnected. How to reconnect it.

Have you seen a red alert in your dashboard telling you that one of your websites is disconnected, or received a notification about it?

This happens to websites that were already connected and working in Modular DS and that lose the connection at some point.

Let's look at the most common reasons and how you can reconnect them.

Why does a website get disconnected?

A website can lose its connection to Modular DS for several reasons. These are the most common ones, in order of frequency:

  • Your hosting is blocking the Modular DS IPs. This is by far the most common cause. Many hosting providers block external connections they don't recognize for security reasons. This can happen at any time, even if it wasn't happening before. If you have several websites on the same hosting service and they've all been disconnected, this is probably the reason.
  • The Modular Connector plugin has been deactivated or deleted on the website, for example after a plugin cleanup or a change of administrator.
  • Something has changed on the site: a hosting migration, a domain change or the restoration of an old backup.

Reconnect your website from the dashboard

The first step is always to try to reconnect from the Modular DS dashboard itself.

1. Find the disconnected website alert

In your dashboard you'll see a highlighted alert with the websites that have lost their connection.

2. Click Reconnect

Next to the affected website you'll find the Reconnect/Connect button. When you click it, Modular DS takes you to the connection flow with that website's details already filled in.

3. Confirm the connection

Choose the manual connection method, making sure the public and private keys of Modular DS are correctly added on the website, and click Connect. You shouldn't need to change anything in the previous setup: the details are already set from the original connection.

In many cases, this brings the website back online.

If reconnecting doesn't work: check your hosting IPs

If you've clicked Reconnect and the website still appears as disconnected, the most likely reason is that your hosting is blocking the Modular DS IPs. This is by far the number one cause when reconnecting fails.

The solution is in your hosting provider's hands: you need to ask them to add the Modular DS IPs to the server's whitelist. That way they'll stop blocking the communication with your website.

You can check the updated list of IPs here:

Pass those IPs to your hosting provider, ask them to add them to the whitelist and, once they confirm, click Reconnect again from your dashboard.

If it still won't connect, contact us

If you've already asked your hosting to add the IPs to the whitelist and the website is still disconnected, contact us and we'll be happy to look into it. To solve it as quickly as possible and avoid back-and-forth, you can help us by having this ready:

  • FTP/SFTP access to the site. This is what lets us investigate in depth. If you can't provide it, then at least WordPress admin access to the affected site.
  • Let us know if the site uses Cloudflare or a similar service. In some cases we need to add specific rules, and knowing this in advance saves time.

With that information up front, we can go straight to the problem instead of asking you for it along the way.
