False downtime alerts in Uptime Monitor

Did you receive an alert that your website was down, but when you checked, it was working normally?

Sometimes the downtime alerts that Uptime Monitor sends via email, WhatsApp, Slack or Discord don't reflect a real problem with your site, but rather a detail in your configuration or in the environment where it's hosted.

These are the most common causes, ordered from most to least frequent, and how to fix them.

One of Modular DS's IPs is blocked

To check whether your website is available, Modular DS visits it from its own IPs.

If your hosting or a firewall service blocks any of those IPs, the check can't reach your site, and Uptime Monitor reads it as down, even though it works normally for your visitors. This is the most frequent cause of these alerts.

Solution: Add Modular DS's IPs to the allowed list (whitelist) of your hosting or firewall. You can check the up-to-date list of Modular DS IPs at any time. If you're not sure how to do this, your hosting provider can help you add them.

The response time is too low

Uptime Monitor lets you define a response time threshold before considering your site as down.

If you set that time below your website's usual loading time, you'll receive unnecessary alerts. For example, if your site takes 2 seconds to load but you've set 1 second as the threshold, the system will alert you for no reason.

Solution: Review and adjust the response time in your website's Uptime Monitor settings. The default value is set to 10 seconds to accommodate most loading times, but you can customize it according to your site's needs.

Your website has a redirect

A redirect on the homepage can cause Uptime Monitor to interpret that your site is down, even when the redirect is intentional and everything works fine.

Solution: You can now tell Uptime Monitor in its settings that there's a redirect.

In the "Redirects" section of the settings, adjust the "Maximum number of redirects" to cover the ones your website has. If you want to fine-tune further, enter the address the redirect should reach in Expected final URL: this way Modular DS will check that it lands where it should instead of marking the site as down.

The monitoring path is not correct

Uptime Monitor checks a specific path of your website. If that path points to a page that doesn't exist or returns an error, you'll receive false downtime alerts even if the rest of the site works.

Solution: Review the "Path to monitor" field, inside "Site-specific settings". Make sure the path is correct, or leave it empty to monitor your site's root URL.

If none of this works

If after reviewing these settings you're still receiving downtime alerts for no apparent reason, write to us letting us know which website is affected so we can look into it with you.
